🎄 Season's Eatings

PLUS: Is a coffee crisis brewing, why lone fruits are being labelled as sad singles and why Oatly is closing its Singapore production facility

As 2024 draws to a close, the Hack community has grown stronger than ever. This year we hosted 107 Meetups and we are now present in 53 cities spanning 32 countries thanks to 134 Ambassadors.

We also hosted 2 global HackSummits counting almost 2,000 attendees (hats off to those of you who ‘did the double’ in both Lausanne and New York).

Soon we’ll be stepping into 2025 with cautious optimism, and one thing is for sure, the FoodTech community continues to show resilience, even through the toughest of times.

📈 What’s up? Tesco says Brussels sprouts this Christmas are going to be 25% larger than last year, thanks to favourable growing conditions and the introduction of new varieties.

☕️ Also up. Coffee prices have reached record highs due to poor weather in Brazil and Vietnam, with Arabica beans up over 80% this year, signalling further price increases for consumers next year.

📉 What’s down? While public climate finance nearly doubled to $640B between 2017 and 2022, funding for food and agriculture declined to just 2.5%, according to a new report from the Global Alliance for the Future of Food.

🍌 New research shows that labelling lone fruits as “sad singles” evokes emotional responses in shoppers, increasing purchases and helping reduce food waste in supermarkets.

📊 Vita Mojo's 2024 data from UK quick-service restaurants shows a growing demand for plant-based options, with vegan orders up 56% and vegetarian orders up 64%.
