🫧 Fat-Trapping Micro Beads

PLUS: 2 latest FoodTech closures, $26M+ funding announced this week, 5 cities looking for a FoodHack Ambassador

Amid rising appetite for injectable weight-loss drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy, researchers at China’s Sichuan University are prototyping a gentler, plant-based contender: plant-based fat-trapping microbeads.

Crafted from green-tea polyphenols, vitamin E and seaweed, these tasteless boba- pearls bind dietary fat in the gut without harsh side effects.

Having seen a 17% weight loss for a trial with rats, now 26 (human) participants have been enrolled in a clinical trial, with results expected in the next year.

Could edible chemistry be a pathway for less invasive weight management, compared to current treatments?
